I'm delighted to be a guest on #KidLitZombieWeek2024! I'm also offering a prize of a critique, so be sure to hop over to the main site to see how to enter and also to check out all the other posts from awesome authors. You can also find info about this challenge on X. If there’s one thing I’ve learned from my We Need Diverse Books mentor, Jane Yolen, it’s that you should never give up on a manuscript. You can do the literary equivalent of cryogenically freezing it, but you also should try reviving it every so often. That was the journey of my upcoming book, CLOUDS IN SPACE: NEBULAE, STARDUST, AND US, illustrated by Diāna Renžina. I first wrote it back in 2014 when I was still with my first agent. She couldn’t sell it, and then she quit the business. I thought it was dead in the water. But when I signed with my second agent, I pulled it out of the morgue and we sent it off to wander the submission world. It came really close this time. An editor had a Zoom chat with us to discuss the R&R (revise and resubmit), but ultimately, she passed on it and I feared I’d have to dump it into a coffin this time. But, the third agent was the charm. She was able to find the perfect home for it at MIT Kids Press and it will become a real, live book on August 20 of this year! So, don’t give up on your manuscript. After all, drafts never die. They can come back again and again…yes, just like zombies…until they finally find a home.
(Note: I didn’t just leave the manuscript to rot away. I would clean it off and give it new clothing every so often so that it stayed fresh—as fresh as a half-dead draft can be anyway.)

I remember one of those drafts and I loved it! Sometimes publishers miss a good one. Glad you kept pouring water on the seed of an idea and found a home!

Did you critique it in an Inked Voices workshop, Wendy? It's so subjective, isn't it, this business? That's why we should never give up hope.

Thank you for encouraging us to never give up on our manuscripts. I have been having a ball revising my very first picture manuscript this past week. I’m learning that it’s never to late to bring our stories back to life. 😊

Yay! I'm glad you're having fun revising your first PB! I have one from 2013 that I still keep revising and every time I bring it out, it makes me smile...and I'm hoping that one day, it'll find an editor who will smile upon it, too. ;)

Hi Teresa! Optimistic words - love hearing about second and third chances! I've gotten some CLOSE looks but I'm still trying to find an agent who believes... Congrats on your story finding its home!!!!

Bri, yes! I love a quote from the move Galaxy Quest that says, "Never give up; never surrender!" :D I think it's a good motto to live by.

What a wonderful reminder to try again with those old stories. And to give them some fresh "clothes"!

LOL, Maria! Zombies always seem to be wearing such rags, which is part of their image problem, I think. ;) A nice new change of clothes always helps!

Susan, as the saying goes, the outfit makes the man(uscript)! ;) But seriously, this business is so subjective, it pays to not give up on a story you love because you will, one day, find someone else who loves it, too.

I have a picture book that I edited in #KidLitZombieWeek three years ago but I still couldn't get it right. I've never been able to let it go completely so I've gone back to it again this week. After the long break I almost have a version that I'm happy with. I'm happy I didn't give up on it :o)

I'm glad you didn't give up on it either, Catherine! I have so many mss over 8 years old that I'm still resurrecting and trying to breathe new life into. Good luck to you!

I've always loved late-in-life success stories. I feel the same when I hear about a manuscript finding a home after many years. It always sparks a little burst of hope. Thank you, Teresa, for this Zombie Week encouragement!

Definitely keep up the hope, Janet! And talk about a late-in-life success story: I was 55 when my debut book came out. :) Keep at it!

Thank you for the inspiration to never give up on a manuscript! I love that yours went through three agents and you still hung in there with it!

Thank *you*, Michelle! It sounds nuts to have gone through 3 agents, doesn't it? But it's so common to not be with one for your entire career...I never knew this when I started writing books. Good luck on your journey!

Great to know there's still hope for my stories. As Jane Yolen reminds us we just have to find the right editor (or agent).
